Monkey D. Luffy, commonly known by the nickname "Straw Hat" Luffy , is the main character of One Piece. He is the Captain of the Straw Hat Pirate crew. When he was a child, his home in Fuusha Village was the home base of a group of pirates led by Red Haired Shanks. Luffy admired Shanks and wanted to become a pirate just like him. Luffy is kind- hearted and carefree until someone hurts or threatens his friends, then he becomes serious and vengeful. In order to achieve his dream of becoming Pirate King, Luffy gathers a crew to sail to the Grand Line where the legendary treasure One Piece is believed to be. Since arriving on the Grand Line, he has continued to expand his crew and is currently seeking a shipwright as the newest member.
Across the span of four hundred chapters, Luffy has grown in his devotion to his friends, but has stayed the same in his overall demeanor and character. His growing attachment to his crew has intensified his will to fight and surpass his foes. For his friends, he risks death, disaster, and more; he does anything and everything for them that he can. His primary trait is his unyielding spirit and will.
Luffy's attacks all utilize his trademark Gomu Gomu Fruit, which lends a distinct and often whimsical edge to his fighting style. As demonstrated on many occasions, ten years of training has forged him into quite a warrior. In addition to his Devil Fruit Powers, he wields tremendous physical strength and near unlimited creativity in battle.
At first a complete unknown in the pirate world, Luffy has not only directly threatened a Navy officer, but he has also sent a Shichibukai flying. Most recently, Luffy invaded the pride and joy of the World Government and single-handedly took down hundreds of Marines. The full repercussions of these actions have yet to be appreciated by Luffy, and currently even the readers don't know what effects these will have on the story. The Gorosei have made it clear that the World Government can ill afford letting him roam free any longer.
Luffy's Past
When Luffy was six years old, a pirate known as "Red Haired" Shanks took base in his hometown. After a year of hearing Shank's stories, Luffy (now seven) wanted to become a pirate. He attempted to prove his bravery and stabbed himself under his left eye (didn't work out). Later that day, Shanks and his crew were celebrating their recent voyage at the local bar. Luffy asked Shanks if he can join his crew (said that his punch was as powerful as a pistol), at which he said Luffy is too young and would probably give him a chance in ten years (Luffy can't even swim!). During the festivities, some mountain bandits busted into the place and the leader, Higuma, wanted some drinks. Since Shanks and his crew drank all but one bottle, he offered the last one to Higuma (which he then smashed over Shanks' head). Luffy watched on as his hero did nothing about it and cleaned up the mess. Before leaving, Higuma smashed some more bottles and called them cowards.
After the mountain bandits left, Shanks and his crew laughed about it. This frustrated Luffy, who said they should've fought. When he walked off, Shanks tried to get him to stay by grabbing his arm. He still walked off, and his arm stretched! Everyone panicked and Lucky Roux (one of Shanks crewmates) realized that the Gomu Gomu Fruit they took from another ship was gone! Apparently Luffy ate it during the ordeal with the bandits, and he now has the ability to stretch his arm like rubber. The drawback to this though was that he couldn't swim ever again (which he couldn't anyway). Sometime later Luffy was at the bar talking to the owner, Makino, about how he was disappointed in Shanks. The mountain bandits came back and wanted some service. While they were drinking, they were making fun of Shanks, which angered Luffy. Eventually he picked a fight with Higuma and got beat up in the village streets.
Shanks and his crew finally returned from their recent voyage and witnessed what's going on. A bandit pointed a gun at the red-haired pirate, who was shot in the head by Lucky Roux. More bandits began to charge at them and are beaten up by Ben Beckman, Shank's first mate, with a rifle (didn't actually fire). Higuma escaped with Luffy using a smokebomb, and hid out at sea. Luffy was thrown overboard moments before the bandit was eaten by a Sea King. The monster lunged towards Luffy, who was saved in the nick of time by Shanks (at the cost of his left arm). Shanks stared it down, frightening it away. Soon after the pirates leave, Luffy is given Shanks' straw hat and declares that he will gather a crew and become King of the Pirates.
Ten years later, Luffy finally sets out on his adventure, and quickly meets the Sea King that ate his hero's arm. He beats it with his Gomu Gomu no Pistol, and continues on for his journey to become King of the Pirates!
Aliases
Mugiwara - "Straw Hat"
Mugiwara no Luffy - "Straw Hat Luffy"
Nicknames
Senchou-san - "Mr. Captain", given by Robin until the end of Enies Lobby.
Captain - Given by various crewmates.

Other Facts
- At the beginning before the anime adaptation was created, Oda drew Luffy with Mayumi's voice in mind.
Though pronounced differently and completely unintentional, the "luff" in Luffy's name ended up having two sailing meanings. He talked about it in a message included in the Grand Paper 3D Adventure pop-up book. As mentioned in a past Color Walk, Oda picked Luffy as the name of his main character "for some reason". It was a complete coincidence!

Luffy's "Forms"
Water Luffy (水・ルフィ)
On the verge of death during the first battle, Luffy realized that he was able to grip onto Crocodile's wrist after it had been soaked by the Yuba water once the tiny barrel was pierced along with Luffy. It was during the rematch when Luffy brings along a barrel of water strapped on to his back. With a hose attached to utilize the water inside, he was able to stand a chance against Crocodile.
Unfortunately, Crocodile wasn't entirely defeated by Luffy's new tactic. Using his own techniques, he was putting the barrel at risk. Had it broken, Luffy wouldn't be able to touch Crocodile again. Luffy then decides to drink it all, thus becoming "Mizu Luffy", or "Water Luffy".
He's able to pump the water and fire large orbs of water from his mouth like a pistol. He even named it "Mizu Mizu Pistol", compliments to his original technique, "Gomu Gomu Pistol".
Afro Luffy (アフロ・ルフィ)
It was the final round of the Davy Back Fight, where the captains of each opposing pirate crew were to fight a one-on-one battle with each other. Luffy and Usopp were taken to a changing room, and that's where it began.
Looking around, Usopp spots an afro among various wigs and props. According to Usopp and Sanji, the afro contained the Brother Soul. It would make Luffy a stronger fighter, but it was more of a psychological influence if anything.
Donning the afro wasn't completely a waste during Combat, since a piece of broken mirror from the Foxy Ship's mirror room got stuck into it during the mini-fight there, giving Luffy the key to counter Foxy's beams.
Gear 2nd Luffy (ギア2・ルフィ)
After the great loss against Admiral Aokiji, a user of ice, Luffy needed a way to become stronger so he could protect his friends. It wasn't until the battle with CP9 Blueno when we find out that he developed a new technique to change his state.
Gear 2nd involves Luffy pumping blood faster, starting from his legs. The strain and pressure on his heart is only possible for someone like him who is the only person with a rubber body. While he is in this form, steam perspires around him.
With this technique, his speed greatly increases, and with that, power. It loses its edge after a short period of time, at which Luffy becomes incredibly tired and weakened. After pushing himself to the limit during a battle, he was unable to move any part of his body. CP9 Lucci understood the secret behind Luffy's newfound power, and claimed that such a technique would only shorten his lifespan.
Gear 3rd Luffy (ギア3・ルフィ)
Not related to Gear 2nd by any means, Gear 3rd is another new technique that Luffy thought of. When he's about to use it, Luffy bites on his thumb and breathes in a large amount of air. Blowing into his thumb which he calls "Bone Balloon", expands his fist into the size of a giant balloon. After, he'll stretch his other arm far behind him, providing the basis for his Gigant Pistol technique. The air is transferred to his other fist, allowing the ease of shooting it forward for a gigantic punch. Because the air is inside the bone, any part of his body that contains the air provides nothing but raw power, unlike what you may expect from a regular balloon. Bullets, iron, metal, and anything of the sort don't stand a chance.
The air gets transferred around his body whenever he needs to use it for a technique. For example, the air needs to be in one of his feet so he can whip it in the same way as his Gomu Gomu Muchi (Whip), except with multiplied intensity.
When Luffy releases the air, he gets reduced to a child-like form. Its duration is roughly equal to the time the air was in his body. In this form, Luffy is incredibly vulnerable; a drawback from gaining so much power.
Nightmare Luffy (ナイトメア・ルフィ)
Introduced in Thriller Bark, Luffy stumbles upon a pirate crew in the forest who had lost their shadows. They discovered a secret to Moria's shadow abilities and needed someone who was strong enough to utilize it.
Once a zombie is purified by salt, the shadow leaves the host body and returns to their rightful owner. During the return, the shadow can be caught by human hands, which was thought to be possible only for Moria. That shadow can then be entered in a body which already has a soul, and give him the power contained inside. This is shown to us when a shadow of a Marine swordsman was inserted into Luffy. Luffy, who previously was unable to use swords, was able to use one instinctively as if he had trained with one during his whole life. After taking in one shadow, Luffy appears to be slightly different, the only difference being in his eyes.
A shadow that enters a dead body becomes a zombie, but can only stay in a body that's alive for roughly 10 minutes. Multiple shadows can be inserted in a person to multiply their power, provided their conscious holds. Luffy almost fainted when the pirates forced one into him, but ended up being able to take in 100 shadows in the end when the pirates held him down during the process. The intake of all the shadows transformed Luffy into what they called "Nightmare Luffy", a much larger being who had an overflow of power and expertised in nothing but fighting.
