Nico Robin has been one of the World Government's most-wanted fugitives for twenty years, and is currently a member of the Straw Hat Pirates. Her Devil's Fruit, the Hana Hana Fruit, is one of the most powerful yet to be seen (outside of a Logia type), and doubtless it's helped her survive against the government's spiteful snarling.

The rest of her crew is mostly a boisterous bunch, but Robin is different: During parties and celebrations she remained in solitude, watching them with a smile, silent and calm as the pirates rejoiced.

Unlike most Straw Hat pirates who joins as a good guy, Robin was different. She started as a major villain and later became an unexpected protagonist, an unique addition to the crew.

She is the only crew member not to show any goofiness or silly expressions. She is a mature crew-member who displays her emotions in a realistic fashion. She loves to read books and to study history. She only speaks up when important or interesting events takes place.

Baroque Works

Before her place with the Straw Hats, Nico Robin worked for Crocodile as the vice-president for Borogue Works. Nico Robin first appeared at the end of the Whiskey Peak arc riding Banchi under the name, "Miss All Sunday". She appeared as a mysterious woman with a strange motive. She blew up Igaram's ship but spared his life. Miss All Sunday revealed to Vivi the identity of the mastermind behind Baroque Works; Crocodile. Vivi herself hated Miss All Sunday's guts for her "crimes". During her confrontations with the Straw Hat Pirates, she toyed with Luffy's hat and gave them helpful hints. She offered the crew an Eternal Post which was broken by Luffy.

Robin's Past

20 years ago, Robin was born on Ohara Island in the West Blue. She was the daughter of Nico Oliva, whom along with her father, died recently. As a toddler, at the age of 2, Olvia left Robin to travel the seas in order to research history. Nico Olvia promised to return for Robin after the completion of her mission.

During her mother's absence, Robin was brought in and raised by Olvia's brother; Robin's uncle. Unfortunately for Robin, her uncle had a wife named Roji, a mean and selfish woman who hated her and treated her like dirt. Whenever Robin would cry for her mother, Roji would threaten and hit her to stop, only to be stopped by Robin's uncle.

Between the ages of 2-8, Robin's life was emotional and hard. Robin ate the Hana Hana devil frut which made her a freak among the Oharan. She was mocked and hated by the children and adults of Ohara, but her mother's dreams gave her dreams. At age of 8, Robin took and passed the archaeological exam perfectly, becoming an official Oharan scholar. For several years she had used the Hana Hana Fruit's power to glimpse the Poneglyph in the basement of the Tree of Knowledge there, against the wishes and without the knowledge of the other scholars, in hopes of someday following in her mother's footsteps.

Shortly after becoming an archaeologist at the age of 8, Robin discovered a washed-up giant on Ohara's shore named Saul. There was no way of knowing but Saul was truly a Naval Vice Admiral who had captured (and set free) Robin's mother Olvia. And from there things turned sour when the World Government's Buster Call was brought to bear against the island.

The Oharans had learned too much. Death snatched them up in the full furor of the mighty Buster Call, and everyone (civilians and scholars alike) perished. That's excepting one girl set free by Vice Admiral Kuzan: An 8-year-old Nico Robin.

Ohara was burnt down. During that entire time, Robin has had to scrape and bow, hoping to grain trust and make a living by joining people and pirates who would later turn her in to the World Government. She's been on the run for 20 years, avoiding the World Government. Her lack of trust and inability to depend on others eventually plays out as a key role in the story.

Trivia

  • Nico Robin's character can be based off Cosette and Valjean from Les Misérables (The Miserable Ones).

Oda is always inspired by other stories. Cosette was a ragged poor girl with a dying mother. Cosette does odd jobs while living with a corrupt and selfish innkeeper. She was later saved by Valjean. Valjean on the other hand was a ex-convict who stole food to feed his family. 19 years later, he was freed from jail on patrol. He tries to make a living but could not escape his past. Vajean kept getting rejected by people.

There was a 20 years span in this story. Much like Valjean, Robin has been escaping the World Government and tries to make living but could not escape her past.

Unlike Valjean, Robin was hated and rejected by the whole world. She tries to redeem herself by finding True History in hopes of freeing herself from the hatered of the world. Much like Cosette, Robin lives with a kind uncle and a mean aunt. Her mother is away and Robin does odd jobs, living a miserable life.
