Nefertari Vivi is the teenage princess of Alabasta. Two years prior to her introduction into the present storyline, she and the Captain of the Guard, Igaram, infiltrated the Baroque Works, an underground organization led by Sir Crocodile, one of the Shichibukai. This group aimed to take over her country. Inside the group, she assumed the name Miss Wednesday, the partner of Mr. 9, and was stationed in Whiskey Peak.
Two years later, she and Mr. 9 attempted to kill Laboon the whale for food, but were thwarted by Luffy and his crew, who had recently arrived on the Grand Line. The two were captured, and insisted that they be taken back to the town, which the crew agreed to. There, upon hearing of the bounty on Luffy's head, Mr. 8 (who was really Igaram in disguise), Miss Monday, Mr. 9, and Miss Wednesday all attempted to kill him for the bounty. However, Zoro took out the whole town of bounty hunters. Igaram assigned the Straw Hat Crew to take Vivi to Alabasta (with a little bit of haggling from Nami), which is how Nefertari Vivi became a partner to Luffy and his crew.
While the dealings with Zoro were going on, Vivi was fighting for her life against the Mr. 5 pair, who had been sent by Crocodile to assassinate the traitors. Later, she was inadvertently saved by Luffy and Zoro, who were in a battle to the death (that is, until Nami stopped the fight herself.
As time went by, Vivi became an important part of the crew, so much that even after the Straw Hats were done with their mission of delivering the princess to her home, they stayed with her and fought for her country alongside her. After her country was saved, she was given an offer to stay on the crew, but ultimately, she declined the offer, with the final promise from her friends that they would always welcome her as a Straw Hat if she ever saw them again.
