Luffy ate the Gomu Gomu Devil Fruit while Higuma was around. Getting angry over Shanks, Luffy walks out, only having Shanks grabbing his arm making it strech.
Luffy was mad at Shanks he went and ate the devil fruit. Shanks saw him eat and it hung him by his feet to make him spit it out, but it was too late.

Orginally, Luffy's past takes place as the first chapter in the manga. The past story was moved to episode 4 of the anime, after the Morgan Arc and Zoro's appearence. It flashes back right before Luffy tries to catch the bird to eat.

Because Luffy's past was shown later in the anime, Luffy's first adventure which involved an encounter with Alvida became the first episode to air.

At the beginning of Chapter 1, Luffy stabs himself under the eye to prove that he was worthy of being a pirate. This was cut from the anime. So the scar is a mystery in the anime.

At the end of chapter 1, when Luffy sets out on his journey to a be pirate, he got back at the sea monster. This was not in the anime, but instead shown during the first opening.
