Absalom / アブサロム

Title: Absalom of the Graveyard / Hakaba no Absalom / 墓場のアブサロム
Position: Commander of the Soldier Zombies and General Zombies
First Appeared: Chapter 444 (invisible)
Devil's Fruit: Suke Suke Fruit
Dream: To become the King of Graveyards
Seiyuu: Hiroaki Miura / 三浦祥朗

Absalom is one of the Four Enigmas of Thriller Bark. He's also quite the pervert, and only likes the beautiful ones. If he's deeply in love, even lightning doesn't phase him one bit.

Absalom occasionally likes to make corny jokes relating to Kumacy and Hogback.

He's not a zombie as one might think.

Name Origin

Absalom shares his name with the one from the Bible, who was a rebellious son of King David of Israel. Absalom from the Bible was known as the most handsome man in the kingdom. Clearly a different person than our Absalom.

But the Absalom from the Bible did have a monument named after him, called "Yad Absalom", or "Absalom's Tomb". It's close to One Piece Absalom's formal title, Hakaba no Absalom (Absalom of the Graveyard/Tomb).

Nicknames

  • Pervsalom - Given by the zombies.

  • Ab-sama - Given by Laura.

Background

One of the first things you'll notice about Absalom is his lion jaw. The bottom half of his face, confirmed by Oda, is said to be from the lion Nami, Usopp, and Chopper saw while riding the carriage to Thriller Bark. In SBS 48, Oda refused to confirm if the reverse was true. Thanks to Dr. Hogback, Absalom's body was powered-up with animal parts. As well as the lion's jaw, he has elephant skin and 300kg of compressed bear and gorilla muscle, all which are hidden beneath his clothes.

Abilities

Absalom has the ability to turn him and others invisible. He can also cause an invisible blast from his palm. It is later discovered that he had hidden two bazookas, one under each wrist. His strength to carry them comes from the animal parts that were implanted in him. Because of his power of invisibility, he's most likely the invisible being who played around with the Straw Hats when they arrived at Thriller Bark's entrance.

First Encounter

Absalom refuses to marry a zombie like Laura. Instead, he seeks a beauty like Nami. He saw Nami naked and tried to steal her while she was showering at the mansion, but failed when Chopper's nose picked up his scent. During the second encounter Absalom made sure not to make a second mistake by rendering Chopper's nose useless with an added scent, allowing Absalom to cloak him and Nami and successfully taking her away.

Destined Enemy

After finding out Nami's predicament, Sanji immediately left to stop the wedding. Unfortunately for Absalom, this was the worst man to anger, not just because of Nami, but because of another additional piece of information Sanji discovered during the fight...

Absalom is a user of the Suke Suke Fruit (Suke: See-Through), a fruit that allows invisibility. One of Sanji's dreams was to obtain this Devil's Fruit to become invisible despite being cursed by the sea:

  • Sanji: I had that dream for a reason!!
If I had those powers, I'd look in the girl's... I mean, do tons of stuff!
How useful it would be to peep in the bath-... I mean, to help people in need!

    (stephen's translation)

Which added to the following reasons why Sanji is his worst enemy:

  • For playing around with them and ultimately licking Robin on the Thousand Sunny

  • For seeing Nami naked in the bath and attempting to abduct her

  • For kidnapping Nami and planning to marry her while she is unnaturally asleep

  • For eating the Suke Suke Fruit
  • For putting Nami in danger during their fight

  • For kidnapping Nami again

Misc.

It's probably a pure coincidence that the voice actors for Sanji (Hiroaki Hirata) and Absalom (Hiroaki Miura) share the same first name.

Second Round

When Odz defeated the Straw Hats, the noise caused Nami to finally wake up from the sedatives Absalom had given to her prior to the first attempt of the wedding. At one point, Laura eventually finds him and attempts to get her kiss. Nami noticed that Absalom had been weakened from a fight earlier and electrocutes him with the Perfect Clima Tact, giving Laura the opportunity to get the kiss that she wanted.

After the Battle

Absalom was woken up by Hogback upon sunrise. They took their master and left Thriller Bark.

Perona / ペローナ

Title: Ghost Princess Perona / ゴーストプリンセス・ペローナ
Position: Commander of the Wild Zombies and Surprise Zombies
First Appeared: Chapter 449
Devil's Fruit: Horo Horo Fruit
Dream: To have a kingdom of cute zombified creatures of the world
Seiyuu: Kumiko Nishihara / 西原久美子

One of the Four Enigmas of Thriller Bark, Perona is the controller of the Negative Ghosts, which, upon contact with a person, temporarily saps their will to live. Though she appears gothic, she likes cute things, so she's always mean to Kumacy who has a quiet voice, a quality she finds uncute.

Perona's distinctive laugh is "horo", which is also the same sound the Negative Ghosts make.

Background

With the completion of Zombie #900, Perona felt that her kingdom of dreams will soon become a reality. It was the creation of a place where all the cute creatures of the world are turned into her personal obedient zombies.

Perona's Wonder Garden

A section of Thriller Bark consists of an area called Perona's Wonder Garden. It's a huge leafed area which is where most, if not all of the Wild Zombies reside. It may have been inspired by Alice in Wonderland.

Abilities

The Straw Hats have had their will to live sapped by the Negative Ghosts many times but there was one person who could resist their psychological effects... and this person claimed to be the most negative person ever. A hint: He has a long nose.

Through astral projection, she can separate her ghostly hollow from her body. This ghostly figure cannot be harmed, but in the same way she can't physically touch anything. She can fly, change size, and pass through objects. Perona is still able to create Negative Ghosts and Mini-Horo Ghosts in this form, which becomes a deadly tactic if her real body is tucked away in safety. In this sense, her real body is a huge weakness.

Perona's greatest weakness which possibly surpasses the problem with her unguarded body is her fear of cockroaches. She can get very frightened easily by other situations which produce a similar level of fear.

Encounter with Bartholomew

While packing up to steal the Thousand Sunny, Perona met Bartholomew Kuma, a Seven Armed Sea. She was the first who experienced his power, when Bartholomew asked where she wanted to go if she had the power to.

Her current location is unknown, but it's assumed she was teleported to a place where she wanted to be.

Like Zoro, Jigoro has a bad sense of direction and is easily provoked by "a Sanji", in this case, Inuppe.

The reason Luffy was able to know that this zombie wasn't Zoro was simply the fact that Jigoro wore getas...

Jigoro is zombie #850.

Ryuma / リューマ

Group: General Zombies
Homeplace: "Wanokuni" (in the New World)

He has adopted Brook's laugh, "Yohoho!" and is the same pervert as Brook can ever be. Though with the same voice, Ryuma speaks with a very sinister tone.

Background

Thanks to Hogback, Ryuma's body was special-made. It was said that when he was once living, he cut down a flying dragon, thus giving him the title, "the legendary samurai".

Ryuma is also the name of a swordsman in Eiichiro Oda's one-shot manga "Wanted!". According to an SBS, they are the same person.

When the two meet, Lola is tricked by Nami when she claims to be the opposite gender, and even adopts Mr. 2 Bon Kurei's way of talking. With a bit of encouragement, Nami turns Lola against Absalom. Lola knew Nami was lying, but wanted to help her out because she was her friend.

Absalom defeats Lola, aggravating Nami. Nami fights and delivers the final blow to Absalom.

Kumacy / クマシー

Position: Perona's Henchman and Captain (Commanding Officer) of the Wild Zombies
First Appeared: Chapter 449
Seiyuu: Hiroshi Iwasaki / 岩崎ひろし

With a cover on his mouth he barely talks, and when he does, it's usually in a form of a whisper. Kumacy's the one to notice important things, but when he gets the chance to talk he doesn't get to the main point, giving Perona the time to tell him to shut up!

Name Origin

Kumacy's name is often translated to Bearsy due to "kuma" meaning "bear".

Background

Kumacy is actually a hollow being with a zipper on his back. Nami, Usopp, and Chopper were able to hide inside him while they were escaping Absalom in Perona's Wonder Garden.

Kumacy is a force to be reckoned with, especially when Perona's in danger. One swipe with his paw is able to break cement.

Tararan's large ears make it seem like they help in finding out info about everybody's actions, but they're really just for show.
