Chapter 237 (Page 26)
SBS International Investigation Committee (SBSIIC?)
O: Uhhh, a few volumes ago, I said that I had been getting a fair number of questions about international versions of One Piece, but for some silly reason, the author, myself, had really no idea either, and so I enlisted the help of the international section of the Shueisha offices to bring together this information. Thank you very much. First of all, these are all the countries that One Piece is sold in, as of October 2002. These are impossible to obtain within Japan itself.

SBS IIC
O: Here you can see how the names of the main characters are pronounced in the different countries One Piece is sold in.
- Look out, some of them are pretty weird.
(Note: The pronunciations are going to be written based on the Japanese katakana. In case you don't know how Japanese vowels are pronounced, here's how it works.
- a = "ah" as in "chicAgo"
- e = "eh" as in "Express"
- i = "ee" as in "bEEp"
- o = "oh" as in "Over"
- u = "oo" as in "prOve")

Anime Info
O: These countries are currently broadcasting the One Piece anime: Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Italy, Greece. So Luffy and the others are speaking in the languages of these countries. I'd like to see that sometime.

O: Depending on the country, sometimes the pronunciation is the same even if the spelling is different, so I only picked the countries with the really interesting readings. Nico Robin doesn't appear because they haven't been published that far. Obviously they all began publication later than Japan. Speaking of which, sometimes I receive fan letters from kids in foreign countries, but... I CAN'T READ THEM (GONNNNN). However, I can pick up the feeling just from the words, so it makes me really happy. Thank you.

Chapter 242 (Page 115)

O: Up here on the left is the French version of the inside flap comments in Volume 10. It was just me talking about how I had become the same age as Sazae-san. However, the French naturally have no knowledge of Sazae-san. So, on the bottom, they added an explanation about the story. I'm sorry they had to go through all of that... From now on, I will withhold all stupid comments (not). Now, look at the right side and be shocked... they even translated the SBS... my goodness. Those moronic exchanges have now crossed the seas. Now, the children of the world say, "Wow, Japanese people sure are dumb". OK, THAT INCLUDES YOU.
Chapter 243 (Page 134)
O: Wow, it's English. This is the American version. In very recent news, Weekly Jump has been scheduled to begin publication in America, November 2002, as "Shonen Jump". Quite interesting to know it's making its way into America. The serialized line-up will be "Dragon Ball", "Yugioh", "Sandland", "Shaman King", "Naruto", and "One Piece" as well. (Note: What about YYH?) This means that Japanese "manga", and One Piece to a lesser extent, is being read more and more around the world. It will be interesting to see how the international picture continues to develop. Well, it won't change my job. And now, I shall end this "SBS International Investigation Committee". Next volume we will return to the usual (stupid) fun SBS Corner. See you next book!! |
