After playing this game, I have one thing to say. It is definately worth the $60 price tag.
Grand Battle 2, hence the name, is a fighting game. The gameplay is a lot like the Smash Bros. series, rather than traditional fighters like Street Fighter. The game takes place during the Alabasta saga and the showdown with Mr. 0 Sir Crocodile. It's a 2-d fighet, so camera angles aren't a problem. There are around 20 different characters to choose from (after unlocking secret characters, of course), so there is great variety when playing.
The game's modes are as thus: Event Battle, Grand Battle, Training Mode, Treasures, and Options. Event Battle is your classic story mode. You can initially choose any of the 7 crew members (Vivi being the 7th), but can eventually play this mode with the other characters after unlocking them. Before fighting each match, you must select one of two opponents to fight. It doesn't matter who you select, the last guy you fight remains the same. To beat the game, you fight 5 matches. After beating the last opponent (who varies depending on which character you are), he/she is unlocked. Event Battle is VS Mode. You can fight a friend in this mode. You unlock fighters by playing Story Mode. Training Mode is a place where you can test out your moves on COMP dummies. Treasures is ALL the cool unlockable stuff, such as BGM test, posters, videos, and more. And in the Options mode you can select difficulty and such.
The graphics aren't bad by PSX standards, but they aren't too good either. They're very polygonal, very reminiscant of Final Fantasy 7's graphics. But like I always say, graphics don't make a game!
The music in this game isn't stellar, but it doesn't get on your nerves. The in-game music is NOT original music from the TV show, which is a downer. But there is an awesome opening for the game. It's new video footage of different characters duking it out, all set to a brand new version of "We Are"!
The controls are nice and smooth. It makes it easy for you to get used to a particular character. The controls are a lot like Smash Bros., actually. You press the attack button and the direction where you want the attack to go. For a combo, you press the attack button three times. The moves are faithful to every character as well. For example, Luffy can jump and then if you press Down + the attack button, he does Gomu Gomu no Yari (spear).
Super moves are also present in this game. Each character has at least two super moves. Many characters' (especially the Baroque Works) specials are them calling for other agents' help. For example, Mr. 2 Bon Kure can call on Mr. 4 or Miss Merry Christmas.
This game has fantastic replay value. There are a bunch of characters to unlock, and TONS of stuff to unlock. I mustv'e beaten the game over 50 times, and I still haven't unlocked everything.
Overall, this game gets a perfect 10. It's 100X better than the first one. Don't even bother getting the first one, its identical to this one, only less characters, and fewer features. I'd play this game over and over and over if I wanted to. I recommend this game to ANY One Piece fan!
This game is extremely rare. You can't find it on ebay. I am not under the liberty to disclose any sites where you can find it in public, so if you want to find this game and/or the new version of "We Are", please contact me.
Have Fun!
